Ricky - approx 4 years old. FIV positive. Will need to be a housecat.

*UPDATE 23/4/26* Ricky is now much more settled and happier having been castrated.

Ricky was living in a group on an industrial estate. He is a little unsettled at the moment, he enjoys a cuddle but is currently quite focussed on food. Since coming here he has been neutered and FIV tested proving to be positive. This means he will need to be rehomed as a house cat. He may be ok living with another FIV cat as he has lived in a group before. He is in good health.
Due to being FIV+ and having a suppressed immune system he will need to be kept as a Housecat.  FIV+ cats can live long happy lives as housecats.
FIV POSITIVE
There's a lot of misinformation out there about FIV cats so here's the most important facts;
- Humans cannot catch FIV from infected cats.
- FIV can only be passed to other cats through a deep bite in which enough saliva enters the broodstream.
- They need to be kept as house cats to limit their chances of injury or infection as the virus suppresses their immune system.
- They can live with other cats as long as they get along they are at no risk of passing on the virus.
-Neutered cats are less likely to spread the virus as it is often territorial fights and wounds inflicted during mating that are high risk.
- As the virus is excreted in their saliva they need to maintain good dental health to avoid dental infections. A good quality dry food is an essential part of their diet, as it should be for any cat.
- Due to their vulnerable immune system they should be kept up to date with vaccinations, worming and flea treatment. As we would recommend for all cats.
